March and April can be a cruel months in the north woods. Spring is still miles to the south while the occasional warm breeze teases the senses. Looking for a good read to take me to a gentler climate I began re-reading Heminway’s Islands in the Stream, set on the Bahamian Island of Bimini, about 50 miles east of Florida. I had never visited the Bahamas but Hemingway’s prose quickly had me lost in turquoise water and bright sun.

It was on one of those gloomy April days that I received a serendipitous phone call from a friend inviting me to accompany him on a sailing trip from the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British territory, 40 miles south of the Bahamas. He said that we’d be bound for George Town, on the Bahamian island of Great Exuma, and "regatta." Never having been one to pass up the oportunity to see a good sailboat race, I signed on.
